Above all else, it goes without saying that good nutrition is essential for a person's well being and quality of life. March is national nutrition month and the nutrition department is working hard to educate the Benedictine community of healthy habits.

Activities are planned not just to help the BU community, but the surrounding areas as well, such as the canned food drive that they are holding. The receptacles for the collection will be in Kindlon Hall. This month the department of nutrition will be devoted to reaching out and educating the community as awareness is growing for good nutrition.

"A lot of people are realizing the importance for good nutrition and a healthy diet," said Sara Trefil, Masters of Science in Nutrition and Wellness student and dietetic intern.

The campaign for good nutrition will be located throughout campus and there will be posters and bulletins that have detailed information, which students are encouraged to watch out for. The bulletins will be placed by student health services throughout the campus, and public messages will be placed on the electronic sign on the corner of College and Maple.

In addition to bulletins, there will be an active presence of qualified nutrition majors accessible to students and faculty.
There will be a booth set up in the cafeteria that will be a source of information and reference for anyone who would be interested in nutrition advice. Also, emails have and will be sent out to the BU community containing useful tips on the topic.

BU's national nutrition month is part of a larger national campaign headed by the American Dietetic Association, which designated the month of March for nutrition awareness.
"Nutrition from the ground up" is the theme of the national campaign this year.

Many of the core focuses and messages of the BU nutrition month are the same. Powering up with breakfast and smart snacking are some of the core ideologies of the campaign on campus. Powering up with breakfast is the concept of eating a nutritious meal to start your day. By doing this, it will help start one's day, and give them more energy. Smart snacking is the idea that people can have nutritious foods in between meals and not consume junk foods.

There is also an emphasis being placed on the benefits of nutritious foods in place of other foods. The best way to ensure that you are eating nutritious is to plan out your meals and food purchasing habits, which allow one to have healthy food close by. There are many small tips that will be conveyed to help people modify their behaviors.

These services are being offered for the entire BU community as well as to the people in the abbey and St. Benet Academy. DuPage residents on Medicare or Medicaid can also get a free consultation with a nutritionist. To make an appointment and take advantage of these services, call ext. 6518.
