Among the various athletic teams, clubs and student organizations of Benedictine University, a guild of impassioned actors and fervent writers lies hidden, emerging every once in a while to perform for the community.

On Saturday, March 20, the BU Theatre Club will put on a free show at 8 p.m. in the Coal Ben that will be open to the entire BU community, as well as family and friends, interested in an exhibition of creativity and talent.

According to senior Nicolette Pollack, current president of Theatre Club, the performance will feature a combination of original short scenes and monologues, all of which were written by BU students.

"This show will be a showcase of not only the acting talent at BU, but the writing talent, as well," said Pollack.

The upcoming show will mark the club's first time presenting exclusively student-written pieces this year. The several monologues and duets have been arranged to interconnect with each other and allow the show to flow cohesively.

In contrast to previous Theatre Club presentations, which have all been smaller, more intimate shows, this show is said to be somewhat larger. Nevertheless, the performance will retain a relaxed environment.

"We are enjoying performing small studio shows in the Coal Ben, which has a lounge atmosphere," said Pollack.

Although Theatre Club is managing without a stage, Pollack would like to see the construction of a theater on campus. The club began a petition for the building of an auditorium and has already garnered over a couple hundred signatures. But until a decision is made, the club will continue hosting its productions
in other areas around the BU campus.

Previous Theatre Club performances have ranged from the professional Christmas show "The Eight: Reindeer Monologues" to other events, including a Shakespeare Night, Masked Ball and Murder-Mystery Dinner Theatre, all of which have been presented in the last two years.

Pollack founded the club in 2008 and has remained president since its inception. The group is comprised of a dozen or so individuals with a shared hobby.

"We are a small but mighty group from very different areas and majors with the common interest of theatre," Pollack described.

With performances such as the forthcoming one, Pollack asks club members to submit their pieces, which are sent in and later discussed in laid-back group meetings. The casual atmosphere may be due to the small size of the group, but Pollack enjoys it nonetheless.

"We are hoping to grow and create a much larger core group and following, but we are enjoying the time that we have right now," said Pollack.

The efforts and talent of the BU Theatre Club will be available for all to see and admire in the upcoming show.

"I hope for everyone involved, actors, writers and audience, to have a great time and a memorable experience," said Pollack.
