Benedictine University has recently announced that it will offer a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education beginning in the fall of 2010.

"The goal of the program is to educate future music educators," explained Luis Loubriel, Director of the Music Department. "Successful graduates will earn a Type 10 K-12 Certificate in the State of Illinois."

Music Education majors will experience a different curriculum than other education or music majors. These students will learn the basics of voice production, piano, conducting and most of the instruments in the band and orchestra. Additionally, the
Music Education majors will have observation hours in elementary, junior high and high school - along with an extra semester of student teaching - to obtain the Type 10 K-12 Certificate.

"Current undergraduate students will have the ability to major in Music Education. However, it will take them four plus years from the time they start as specialized education classes each semester," explained Loubriel.

BU's program will be similar to that of other universities because it will have to fulfill certain state requirements, but there will be differences as well.

"The Bachelor of Arts in Music Education at Benedictine excels in the quality of our class offerings, observation experiences and distinguished faculty members," said Loubriel.

Seeing as music education is growing in popularity all over the country, Loubriel expects that BU's program will become very successful as well.

"The Departments of Music and Education at Benedictine have some of the most distinguished faculty members in the area who are dedicated to this program," said Loubriel.

Any student interested in this degree should contact Loubriel at LLoubriel@ben.edu for further information.
