It has been just about a year since Benedictine University announced it would be launching new degree programs, offered through the Business, Liberal Arts and Science departments. The programs have been slowly integrated in correlation to their relationship with residential college deans and counselors.
Administrators promised last year that the programs - in which students will have the option of requesting to be a part of - would offer guidance to new students with an enthusiasm for broadening their education.
The creation of the new degrees was announced in November 2009, however the work behind the program started months prior to the announcement. Faculty and staff began working towards 're-inventing' BU - they were given the resources to establish and implement new degrees offered to students; including Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with K-12 Illinois Certificate, Business and Science Application major that was formally launched at the beginning of the Fall Semester, 2009; in addition to expanding the Bachelor of Administration in both Finance and Marketing, for the Springfield chapter.
"Although we define music education broadly, including traditional public and private school music, private instruction and other aspects of music education, our program leads to the attainment of a Type 10, K-12, Illinois Teaching Certificate," said Luis Loubriel, D.M.A., chair of the Department of Music to Phil Brozynski, Media Relations Manager.
"The music department's goal is to prepare outstanding music educators who will be positive role models and who will serve in leadership positions in the music education field," Loubriel continued.
Involvement in the Department of Music program will develop students' teaching skills through involvement in master classes, methods courses, field experiences, student teaching and research projects. In addition to teaching, the program also prepares students for careers in school administration and arts advocacy, according to BU Media Relations.

It's great to see this kind of thinking taking place at Benedictine. It would be terrific to add a 'business' aspect to the music education degree program to help students prepare for what my colleagues and I feel will be a sweeping change in the way music education is accessed in the near future.
