Students Backing Monk in Porn Inquiry
Issue date: 2/23/10 Section: News
LATROBE, Pa., Feb. 22 (UPI) -- Several students St. Vincent College say Father Mark Gruber should return to the Pennsylvania school despite pornography being found on the monk's computer.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said Monday 73 students at the school in Latrobe, Pa., gathered last week to support Gruber, who has been relieved of his anthropology professor post last year following the pornography discovery.
"There has been an extreme injustice done to a very good man," senior Michael Cartier, 22, said at last week's gathering.
In addition to being removed from his St. Vincent post last July, the 53-year-old Gruber was banned from all contact with ministry and students.
Pennsylvania State Police investigated the pornography discovery amid concerns the adult material included child pornography due to the fact the word "boys" was featured in the names of visited pornographic Web sites.
Investigators found no evidence proving individuals involved in the pornography were minors and also determined other individuals had access to Gruber's computer.
St. Vincent senior Kelsey Sullivan told the Post-Gazette Gruber was an influential teacher.
"His talks had a big impact on my faith," she said. "I really feel that, at the very least, there wasn't due process."
