Although this year it seems like the names are already engraved from the start, this year's Oscar Awards might have some surprises. In a loving fashion, here are my predictions and some of the hopefuls that might have a shot this year.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role:
Who will win: Mo'Nique "Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire"
Contender: Maggie Gyllenhaal "Crazy Heart"
Underdog: Anna Kendrick "Up in the Air"

In a story of comedian turned actress, Mo'Nique triumphs. This is the first time she has stepped out of the comedic scene and into a troubled character full of violence and rage. Her performance is remarkable and this role was a chance for her to make or break a career and she committed to it with her whole heart.

Best Actor in a Supporting Role:
Who will win: Christoph Waltz "Inglourious Basterds"
Contender: Christopher Plummer "The Last Station"
Underdog: Woody Harrelson "The Messenger"

Waltz is a predominately German-born European actor, but with his breakthrough first American film, he has truly impressed both critics and audiences alike. His sinister performance as a Nazi is both terrifying and oddly humorous at the same time. Yet, it is remarkably memorable. No doubt about it, Waltz will bring home the statue.

Actress in a Leading Role:
Who will win: Sandra Bullock "The Blind Side"
Contender: Meryl Streep "Julie and Julia"
Underdog: Carey Mulligan "An Education"

This will be the greatest night in Bullock's career. For the first time, Bullock has truly been treated more than just a "main stream" actress. However, every actress in Hollywood wants to gain this respect, Julia Roberts did it nine years ago and even Grace Kelly in the '60s.

Streep is flawless as Julia Child in "Julie and Julia" and this nomination will make it a record 16 best actress nominations for her career. During the Critics Choice awards a month ago, both Streep and Bullock won the best actress award. Maybe this will escalate to tie between the two Oscar night.
