A talented quarterback, an aging offensive line and not a star receiver in sight could be the reasons why it has taken the Chicago Bears so long to hire an offensive coordinator.

Bears fans should be well acquainted with NFL assistant coaches all over because those are the candidates the Bears have reached out to unsuccessfully. The team has interviewed Minnesota Vikings quarterbacks coach, Kevin Rogers, Hue Jackson, Baltimore Ravens quarterbacks coach, and Bengals quarterbacks coach, Ken Zampese.

The Bears have also interviewed Chargers' assistant head coach and tight end coach, Rob Chudzinski and now they have gone to the last resort, Mike Martz, former coach of the St. Louis Rams and the founder and orchestrator of the "Greatest show on turf." While Martz was in St. Louis, he was known for his creative plays and great players on offense with Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner and Torry Holt.

The Bears first candidate was Jeremy Bates, offensive coordinator for the USC Trojans, but he didn't interview for the job because he followed his friend Pete Carroll to the Seattle Seahawks. The team also wanted Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach, Tom Clements.

All of the aforementioned candidates have declined or moved on except Martz. Martz seems to be the last option for the team because they felt better options were available, but no one seems to want the job. General Manager, Jerry Angelo said in an online interview two weeks ago, "It's a very important decision. It's probably the biggest decision that we've made had to make since I've been here, other than hiring a head coach. It's something we want to look at very hard and I feel confident that we are going to get it right."

I agree with Angelo that it's maybe his biggest decision because he has proven in the past that he can't make any decisions especially when the spotlight is on him. Before the start of the 2009 season, Angelo did acquire quarterback, Jay Cutler.

However, Cutler has no supporting cast at all. His offensive line is getting older and he is stuck with trying to develop young and inexperienced wide receivers. Cutler's best offensive weapon struggled this season, running back Matt Forte.
