In the midst of a Midwest winter, there often is little activity to do especially after all the holiday celebrations. However, for Benedictine alumni there is a function scheduled in the cold of winter designed to warm their hearts and come back to their alma mater and enjoy themselves.
The Red and White Gala will take place on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 6 p.m. and will be held in the Krasa Student Center on the second floor. The event is R.S.V.P. for alumni that are interested in attending and a response must be received by Saturday, Jan. 30 and the cost is $80 per couple.
The Red and White Gala was formerly known as the Sweetheart Club and was an event for married alumni who had both attended BU and subsequently married each other.
The event was an opportunity for these exclusively BU couples to gather and share an early Valentine's Day and has always been held the Saturday before Valentine's Day as part of tradition.
The event has expanded to include alumni who have married outside the BU family or alumni who would like to bring their significant other.
In the course of the evening, many activities are planned. The evening will commence with cocktails and includes a sit down dinner accompanied by a blessing for all the marriages from Fr. Frank Beckett and Fr. David Turner,.
The event is intended to provide a winter escape for any alumni who are interested in attending.
Julie Nelligan, Alumni Relations Director, said, "This is a feel good event for a cold winter night."
The evening's entertainment is a silent auction which has as some of the items offered local hotel getaway packages, a baseball signed by Koyie Hill, packages for the Kane County Cougars and other surprises. The evening's activities are accompanied by music provided by Music Mania, which is an interactive DJ.
Eric Guthrie, Coordinator of Alumni Relations said, "It's a great event for alumni to come back and enjoy themselves."
The celebrants do not go home empty handed either; an alumnus donates the party favors from their enterprise, Grand Chocolates.
One of the past attendees, Corinne Vargas, said, "It was a good event and nice to see a lot of couples from Benedictine Celebrate."
