For the Benedictine University women's basketball team, Saturday afternoon's affair was not only an opportunity to rebound from a 66-42 loss to Lynn University, but it was also an opportunity to gain ground in conference play while experiencing a brand new wooden surface.
The Lady Eagles are struggling early this season, but the same can be said for Maranatha, who entered Saturday's action with a 1-7 record in the NAC.
Prior to Saturday's bout with Maranatha Baptist Bible College, the Eagles had lost six of their last seven games, which forced to play elsewhere due to the Rice Center renovations.
In their first "true" home game of the season, BU defeated Maranatha 83-57. After briefly trailing 5-0, the Eagles erupted to go on a 20-0 run and would never look back. Following a Crusaders basket on the ensuing possession, the Eagles pulled away after an additional 13-0 run.
The Eagles went into the break with a convincing 44-22 lead and would out-score the Crusaders 39-35 in the second half to seal the deal.
Benedictine was led by sophomore guard Tracey Walsh, who used a 55 percent field goal percentage to her advantage in providing BU with 16 points.
While Walsh's 16 points was a team-high, the Lady Eagles also had two other scorers in double digits.
Senior forward Monika Krozel supplied 13 points to go alongside her four rebounds and three steals. Junior guard Karyn Conerty added 10 points for the Eagles and also grabbed four rebounds.
"We've been losing a lot of conference games and it was good to win, especially on this floor. We played as a team today. We worked the ball around and looked for the easy baskets," said Monika Krozel.
"The last couple of games, we relied too much on our three-point shooting and were shooting pretty bad. We just worked the ball around and made it happen by getting the easiest shot."
Senior guard Karissa Povlsen had nine points and four assists, while junior guard Lidia Arias had eight points and provided a team-high five assists, respectively.
Saturday's win improved the Eagles' record to 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the NAC, where they currently hold the fifth spot in the NAC South Division.
Benedictine's next contest will take place on Jan. 20 against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The Eagles' next home game will be on Jan. 26 in which they will reunite with conference rival, Aurora University.
