The Benedictine University women's basketball team has had to adjust their schedule and their practices but the Lady Eagles have come out fighting in the early part of the season. The Eagles are 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the Northern Athletics Conference.
The team has not yet played a game at home due to the Dan and Ada Rice Center renovations. They have been practicing at 5:30 in the morning at North Central College.
"Not being able to play at home is tough, but we have worked hard during practices and we want to go out and win no matter where we are playing," said junior Karyn Conerty.
The Eagles opened play against non- conference team, North Park University, on Nov. 24. After a hard fought game, BU came up short, 56-55. The team shot 35 percent from the field. With the second game on the road the Eagles traveled to Trinity International University to get their first win of the season.
Junior Jenn Bren led the team with game high of 19 points in a 69-64 victory.
The team shot 76.7 percent from the free throw line.
In their third game, Bren led the Eagles to a 64-55 win with 18 points, seven rebounds and two blocks against MacMurray College. BU out rebounded them by a 48-41 margin.
On Nov. 24 the Eagles traveled down the road to neighbor North Central College. BU fell 71-61 in their final non conference game. The team was led by Conerty with 13 points, four assists and three steals.
The first conference game came against long time rival Aurora University. The Eagles came out with sharp shooting from the three point range, shooting 9-of-18.
With tenacious effort on the offensive glass BU grabbed 28 offensive boards and outrebounded the Spartans 58-36. The Eagles were led by Bren with 16 points and eight rebounds in a 83-58 win.
"We played very tough against AU," said Bren "We came out fighting from the very beginning. We knew what we had to do against them to win and we played as a team."
Coming off a win against Aurora, BU faced Dominican University. The Eagles fell to the Stars 70-53 after being out-rebounded 48-35. Bren led the team in points with 11 and Senior Monika Krozel led the team with eight rebounds.
"We need to be more consistent and play with energy every time we step on the court," said head coach Paul Nelson. "We were a completely different team when we played Dominican than we were against Aurora. If we play as a team and play like we did against AU then we have a good chance at the competing for the conference championship."
The Lady Eagles lost to Lakeland College to Lakeland College this past weekend. The score was 65-55. Karyn Conerty led the team in scoring with 14 points.
