Deck the Library Halls
What better way to show Christmas spirit then with the art of giving? The Benedictine community did just that as they donated to a local animal shelter by purchasing Christmas ornaments in the BU Library.

The Benedictine Community is already in the Christmas spirit of giving. Benedictine staff and students participated in "Deck the Library Halls," on Nov. 30 to support Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment, a local non-profit animal shelter to help neglected pets.
The Library Social Committee sponsored a charity for staff and students to donate $1 for an ornament to represent their pets. The ornaments are hung along the library's front desk and the proceeds will go directly to the animal shelter.
According to the shelter's website, over 10 million healthy cats and dogs are euthanized every year because of pet overpopulation. The corporation provides medication and shelter for animals in poor conditions.
Volunteers work with 15 to 50 animals every week while ensuring medical attention. They strive to care for the unwanted animals until they place them into loving homes. Some animals are in life threatening conditions, and they rely on donations to receive treatment. Since 1989, the company has been successful in finding homes for over 20,000 animals.
Each year, The Library Social Committee chooses a charity to supportand decided to change things up this year.
"We chose A.D.O.P.T. because we're all animal lovers. It's sad to hear that people are getting rid of their pets because of the economy," said Debbie Sarna, BU Librarian.
The library staff baked 300 cookies for students to decorate and enjoy during the weeks leading up to finals.
"Deck The Library Halls" welcomed students to decorate the cookies outside of the library while inside the library ornaments were hung on the tree.
Even the busiest of students took time to help the charity. BU student Elizabeth McGuinty was rushing to get to a study session, however, she still stopped and purchased six ornaments to help animals in need and represented her own pets.
While students trimmed the tree with colorful ornaments and ate their snacks, many of them contributed to the cause.
