After winning the Northern Athletics Conference South Division last year, the Men's Basketball team is back and ready for action. Last season, the team finished with a record of (19-8, 12-4).
This season, the Eagles are setting their goals high with the hopes of getting a bid to play at Nationals. With the loss of Jared Bailey, the 2008-2009 NAC Male Player of the Year, other players need to step up their game. Head Coach Keith Bunkenburg says that he has confidence in his players and knows that the guys will play to their highest potential.
The team is fortunate to have four starters returning: Cameron Snelling, AJ Brown, Dan Klecan and Nate Green. The bench also has experience with many returners and newcomers. Michael Fahey, Mike Bumber, Rob Bridgeman, Brian Genslinger and Terry Licht are returners which will be counted on.
The team has welcomed three new transfer students that hope to bring some more strength to the Eagle's lineup: Anthony Dobson, Jerrell Tribble and Bradley Bruno.
Bruno, the 6-foot-2 guard, comes to BU from St. Mary's University of Minnesota where he played the last two seasons.
Tribble, the 6-foot guard, was the team captain at Olive-Harvey Community College, where he played for three seasons and was ranked 23rd in the nation for steals in the NJCAA DII.
Dobson, the 6-foot-5 forward, played at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan. He helped lead the team to the 2009 NJCAA DII National Championship.
One of the strong points of this year's team is the amount of experience that is returning. The only thing that will take some time is being able to find the teamwork balance between the newcomers and the returners.
The team is also privileged to acquire a new assistant coach this season to help out Head Coach Bunkenburg and Assistant Coach Frank Janczak. Steve Schafer brings great energy and knowledge to the program.
"Steve is a quality coach and recruiter," Bunkenburg said. "Our basketball program and University will benefit from his experience and energy. I am extremely excited he is on board and look forward to working with him."
