During the month of October, people have a chance to participate in activities that include trick-or-treating, carving jack-o'-lanterns and attending haunted houses allowing people to show off their imaginations and come up with crazy innovative costumes.
On Oct. 29, Benedictine University students, faculty, staff and families were invited to participate in a Halloween Costume Contest. The contest was held in the Krasa Center Dining Room from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. and was sponsored by Student Activities.
The contest had three different categories. Categories were held for children, students and staff. The contests that participated were dressed to impress the judges.
The contest for the children was hardly a contest, but was a chance for the children of faculty and staff members to show off their costumes. Costumes included a baby chick, Spiderman and a glowworm. The children were all awarded prizes for participating.
The second category was held for the students. Contestant Kevin Koszola showed off a scary costume by being a werewolf while two girls dressed as twins.
Koszola said, "It was a fun dressing up as a werewolf and participating in a Halloween contest. Being able to participate in the contest allowed me to get into the Halloween spirit. I am a fan of horror movies and the month of October, so I was able to play the part well."
The winner of the student contest was Dan Grossman who wore a plain orange shirt with writing that stated, "THIS IS MY HALLOWEEN COSTUME, SO GIVE ME MY CANDY." As Grossman showed, Halloween is not just a spooky holiday - it can also be a funny one too.
The final category of the contest was held for staff members. Costumes included Dracula, a Geisha girl and a flapper. The winner of the contest went to Ben Central, as they dressed up as the popular disco group of the late 70s - the Village People.
The three judges for the contests were Marco Masini, Hope Keber and Brother Rick Poro. Contest winners were all awarded prizes and the children were all given prizes for showing off their costumes.
The costumes varied from funny to scary and kicked off the Halloween weekend for the people of BU.
Assistant to the Director of Student Activities, Katie Buell said, "It's good to see students and staff get into the Halloween spirit. Hopefully next year more students will show up for the Halloween contest."
