It isn't very often that you come across two competing sports teams with the same mascot, but last Tuesday afternoon was a prime example of this statement.
Unfortunately, the Eagles of the Benedictine University women's tennis team were on the short-end of the stick, falling to Northern Athletics Conference leading Edgewood College, 1-8 in their final home match of the season. The loss also put an end to the tennis career of seniors, Lisa Carrillo, Jenni Brechtel and EvAngelina Gallegos.
For Benedictine, the lone win of the day came at the No. 1 doubles position where the Lisa Carrillo and Ewelina Stachulak duo teamed up to defeat Edgewood's Amber Hemp and Shae Beckwith, 8 games to 1.
Tuesday's loss dropped Benedictine's record to 8-6 overall and 7-4 in the NAC.
Interestingly enough, the win by Carrillo and Stachulak helped improve their overall record to 10-4 with a 9-2 record in the NAC. The remarkable numbers earned the tandem a No. 2 seed in the NAC Championships this weekend (Oct. 3-4) in Madison, Wis.
Not only will Carrillo and Stachulak be making an appearance in the NAC Championships, but five other Benedictine players earned a spot and will be joining them, as well.
