Relay for Life is a nationwide event that began in 1985 and gathers over 3.5 million people celebrating those who have survived their battle with cancer and remembering lost loved ones.

On April 23, 2010, Benedictine will be hosting Lisle's Relay for Life in the Rice Center and the event will conclude on April 24, 2010. It is an overnight event designed to raise money for research and development of cancer treatments. During the event, teams of volunteers take turns walking laps on the track.

BU's Relay for Life committee is already beginning to host events to make the BU community aware of the overnight event in April. On Wednesday, Sept. 30, the Relay for Life committee set up tables in upstairs Krasa with information and flyers on the event. The committee also had a sign-up table for team captains for anyone interested in creating their own team.

It is easy to join or create a team to participate in this event. Anyone can volunteer to be a team captain, and all they have to do is gather a few friends to join. The American Cancer Society encourages each team member to donate about $100 and prizes may be handed out to those who raise more.

Anyone wanting to participate, but does not wanting to be on a team can also participate as there are plenty of opportunities to be on the planning committee or to volunteer on the day of the event.

Special events take place during the walk to commemorate cancer survivors including Luminaria. Luminaria is a remembrance ceremony that honors those who have survived and those who have lost their battles with cancer. Names of loved ones are written on the outside of the luminaria bags, and each bag is illuminated at the start of the event. The cost of a luminaria bag is $5. There is also a silent auction that is going to take place on the night of the relay. All proceeds will go directly to the event.
