The Eagles opened their 2009 campaign at home this past weekend against Elmhurst and lost, 24-14. However, it didn't feel like much of a defeat more than a game of missed opportunities.
BU was in the game from the jump, the defense was flying all across the field, making good tackles, having good coverage downfield, but the offense couldn't give any support early.
The Eagles defense caused the Bluejays to go three-and-out on the first three stands. The offense just didn't stay on the field long enough to rest the defense.
In the first quarter, junior quarterback Phil Pedi scored the first touch down for the Bluejays with an 11-yard run after an interception was thrown by Eagles senior quarterback David Klinger.
The Bluejays later converted a field goal on a botched punt by senior Neal Revane which made the score 10-0 at that point.
In the second quarter, the Eagles got their offense rolling with some passing plays. The Eagles also got some help from their sophomore kick returner, Eric Green. Green put his team in great field position with his return. Green tallied up 61 kick return yards on four attempts against the Bluejays.
This eventually led to a surprise at running back, junior Derek Hitt. Hitt was the offense on this night and he scored the first touchdown for the Eagles making the score 10-7 with six minutes to go in the first half.
Hitt make some nice moves and showed speed that no one has ever seen out of him before. Hitt received a lot of playing minutes because of an injury that took place to Ryan Schwartz, who had to leave the game. He later returned, but only for one play. The extent of his injury is unknown at this moment.
If Schwartz is unable to play, the Eagles certainly have a solid back-up in Hitt. Hitt ran for 130 yards on 25 carries with one touchdown on the night.
With less than two minutes left in the half, the Bluejays drove the length of the field and Pedi threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to senior wide out Blake Veldhuis.
