It's not downtown Chicago. But there are places on and around the Benedictine University campus, where students can go and have fun without having to go all the way into the city. The university also offers a few helpful ways to make sure that students arrive to and from destinations safely.

If going far isn't what students are looking for, all are welcome to come and enjoy time at the Coal Ben. With
its rustic interior, dart boards and bag sets, this spot feels more like hanging out in a friend's basement than going out to the
loud and often crowded bars in the area.

Special events are planned there, often several times a week. In November and January the Programming Board hosted Club Neon, which created a club-like atmosphere, with black lights
and neon paint all over. Students went whether or not they were able to drink or not and danced the night away.

This semester Coal Ben now has Taco Tuesdays and for students who are twenty-one and older, the Coal Ben offers Budweiser products that can be purchased by the cup for $1.50 or six dollar pitchers.

The largest benefit for students living on campus is that it is just a short walk away, and usually is a good time.

Down the street from BU is The Lodge Pub and Grill in Four Lakes. From the outside, the Lodge looks just as it sounds, like a ski lodge. Inside there is a large dance floor and bar that
offers a full menu, DJ or several nights a week, live music.

Monday through Thursday there are different drink specials on beer, mixed drinks and shots that are also available. The Lodge does have a cover charge that ranges from five to ten dollars, depending on the night of the week.

"I have been to The Lodge a few times, and it's usually a good time. It's close to school and where I live which is nice," Bill Dyer, senior and finance major, said.

Friday nights are Ladies' Night, and women don't pay the cover charge. Sundays are Customer Appreciation Day, where half-priced drinks are offered all day. The Lodge has a large dance floor with most of its patrons under the age of thirty.

Less than one mile down Maple Avenue is the Maple Avenue Pub. This bar is attached to a small shopping complex, close to the El Burrito Mexicano, a place good for a late night snack,
which definitely adds to its appeal. It is close to the university and offers a large menu and daily drink specials on 24 oz beers.

Every Friday and Saturday night there is live music and different special events advertised throughout each month. The demographic of the Maple Avenue Pub is a little older than that of a typical four-year-university, with most of their regulars being in their late twenties and above, but everyone is welcome.
